Can laptops help younger students improve their writing?

eSchool News online

Ok, my technophiles, what do you think? Is there enough evidence from Maine and British Columbia for us to believe writing is improved when students use computers (laptops or desktops)...or, do we need more proof, and if so...what type of proof do we need?

Something for you teachers to think about!

Computers can help students in certain aspects but over all they may be detrimental to the young writer. I think that useing a computer to write definately helps with the editing proctess. It is much easier to copy and paste to move things around. The aspect that has me concerned is the spelling and grammar check. If the students do not look things up in the dictionary themselves they are less likely to remember how to spell the words later. They will not be doing all their writing on the computer so, being able to spell is still important. Also with the grammar checking ability of the computer the students already lacking grammar skills will plummet even further. I know many college students that tell the computer to "replace all" and the final draft doesn't make any sense because they trusted the computer that it was right. How many times have you typed the wrong word but the computer didn't pick it up because it was a real word? Students still need to learn the basics before they learn the shortcuts.
